Under the Wine Act 2003, all but the smallest winemakers are required to register a wine standards management plan that sets out how they will meet their obligations to produce wine that is fit for consumption, traceable and truthfully labelled.
The wine industry is regulated by to the Wine Act 2003. All winemakers who produce more than 10,000 litres per year or who export must register a wine standards management plan to provide assurances locally and to overseas markets.
The industry code of practice by New Zealand Winegrowers can assist in this process. The code is relevant to all businesses involved in grape winemaking, including those making or bottling wine under contract. (A separate code of practice is available for cider and mead.)
To comply, the winemaker must first complete documentation confirming they will use the code of practice or develop their own process. Telarc, as a recognised agency under the Wine Act, can then undertake an on-site audit to confirm, among others:
- Wine in any package can be traced back to the source vineyard(s)
- All other winemaking inputs can be identified
- Labels and truthful, accurate and verifiable.
Telarc’s expert team will make the experience of attaining Wine Act compliance easy.
Key Benefits
- Codify winemaking processes
- Ensure regulatory compliance
- Gain market access, including overseas.
How to achieve certification
Contact Telarc using our quote request form and we will help you through the process to achieve the certification(s) your organisation strives for.
The standards can be complex, but we’ve made it easy with simplified self-evaluation checklists that break down what you need to have implemented to meet the requirements of the standard. You can use the checklist to determine to what extent you already meet the requirements to become accredited, and which gaps need to be addressed.
Once you’re satisfied that your organisation meets the requirements, Telarc will audit your systems and either issue the certification or identify non-conformances that you need to address before certification is granted.
