Ambulance & Paramedic Service Certification

NZS 8156

Home > Medical > NZS 8156 Ambulance Standard

All ambulance and paramedic service providers in New Zealand should meet the NZS 8156 standards. It provides national benchmarks in service delivery and organisational operation for ambulance providers.

The New Zealand Standard for ambulance services was introduced in 2002 as a first attempt at providing a national benchmark for all ambulance providers. It established guidelines for the provision of services that are safe and reliable, and efficient in the use of public funds and donated services. It has been updated a number of times since.

This standard sets standards of service for how ambulance and paramedical services are organised and provided. Through the demonstration of clinical safety, reliability, efficiencies, and effectiveness it assesses the extent to which ambulance and paramedical services are worthy of patients' confidence.

The NZS 8156 standard applies to any organisation that:

  • Provides an emergency ambulance service
  • Provides a paramedical or commercial services for events such as concerts
  • Provides an ambulance service to transport acute or admitted hospital patients
  • Uses the expression ambulance, paramedic, or medic to describe its services
  • Operates an emergency ambulance clinical control centre.

Telarc’s expert team will make the experience of attaining NZS 8156 Ambulance and paramedic service standard easy.

How to achieve certification

Contact Telarc using our quote request form and we will help you through the process to achieve the certification(s) your organisation strives for.

The standards can be complex, but we’ve made it easy with simplified self-evaluation checklists that break down what you need to have implemented to meet the requirements of the standard. You can use the checklist to determine to what extent you already meet the requirements to become accredited, and which gaps need to be addressed.

Once you’re satisfied that your organisation meets the requirements, Telarc will audit your systems and either issue the certification or identify non-conformances that you need to address before certification is granted.
